Appendix B
EXPLORATORY BOREHOLE,
SOIL SAMPLING,
DECONTAMINATION AND QUALITY ASSURANCE PROCEDURES,
MONITORING WELL INSTALLATION,
WELL DEVELOPMENT PROCEDURES AND
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING PROCEUDRES
EXPLORATORY BORING
' Before exploratory boreholes were drilled, a number of actions were performed drilling
permits were obtained, and an underground utility-locating service were contracted to clear
' subsurface utilities for the proposed boreholes in addition, Underground Service Alert
(USA) was contacted to schedule public and private utility companies to mark their respective
subsurface improvements
Field personnel began drilling by excavating the first four feet of soil with a hand auger to
ensure that there were no subsurface obstructions Exploratory boreholes, to be completed as
2-inch-diameter monitoring wells, were drilled with 8-inch outer-diameter (OD) hollow-stem
augers (HSA) Boreholes to be completed as 4-inch diameter wells were drilled with 10-inch
HSA's The augers were steam cleaned before each borehole was drilled
1
SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples were collected while drilling to evaluate the geochenustry and stratigraphy of the
' soil at the borehole location The soil was sampled by driving an 18-inch-long modified-
California split-spoon sampler fitted with 2-inch-diameter liners beyond the tip of the auger
' into undisturbed soil The split-spoon sampler was driven into the soil with a 140-pound
hammer As the sampler was driven into the soil, blow counts were recorded for each 6
inches of penetration The blows were recorded on the borehole logs Samples were
collected every S or 10 feet, depending on the lithology encountered Soil samples were
classified and logged according to the Unified Soil Classification System The work was
supervised by a California State registered geologist to ensure that it met regulatory standards
Each soil sample was sealed inside the liner with TeflonTM tape and polypropylene end caps,
and wrapped with duct tape The soil samples were labeled, and stored in an iced cooler for
I04/18/94/1213821125997/DRILDONE DOC
I
