The
quarterly report presents results of groundwater monitoring performed in November 1997. The letter
requests to modify the monitoring program by eliminating monitoring wells (MWs) 1 and 2 and ceasing
testing for total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel and gasoline (TPHd/g).
My review of monitoring reports shows that MW 1 is cross -gradient from the plume and MW 2, albeit
upgradient, is at least 250 feet from the plume. Replacement MWs are planned to be installed in March
1998. My review of the monitoring reports also finds that four consecutive quarters of nondetectable
TPHd/g have been recorded, but benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX) have not been
included in the monitoring program. Mr. Kintzer's request to eliminate MWs 1 and 2 and TPHd/g
from the program is hereby granted. However, since gasoline and aviation fuel tanks exist at the
site, the groundwater should be monitored for BTEX and oxygenates (see attached letter) for at
least four quarters, beginning in the second quarter of this year. After four consecutive quarters of
nondetection, you may request elimination of BTEX and oxygenates from the monitoring program.
If you have any questions, you may call me at (916) 255-3081.
•7 `''f vc,,t,.•n •. -YC'tic—✓tom✓
PHILIPS.
