NATIONAL ADVERTISING COMPANY - ADDITIONAL SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
8.0 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
8.1 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
The harmful effects that chemical substances may have on. -the human body often necessitate the use of
protective clothing. Proper selection of personal protective equipment (PPE) depends upon a number of
factors. The protective equipment used must be suitable for the hazard(s)' confronted. All PPE used on
the work site will conform with the guidance specific in Earth Tech's Health and Safety Policy 500
Series, Protective Equipment,
Appropriate PPE ensembles are specified. on a task -by -task basis in the task hazard analyses found in:
Section 5.0, and upgrade criteria are based upon on-site monitoring results are presented in Table 7-2. At
a minimum, all personnel on site will use the Level D ensemble described in Section 8.2.1.
8.2 CHEMICAL PROTECTIVE ENSEMBLES
In response to the challenges presented by site contaminants, specific PPE;`ensembles. have been
developed. The designated levels of protection are, in increasing complexity: Level D, Modified Level
D, Level C, Level B, and Level A..` These ensembles provide progressively increasing protection against
chemical hazards, and are defined primarily by the level of respiratory protection provided and
secondarily by the level of skin protection. General specifications for each ensemble are listed below, but
specific equipment may vary depending on specific conditions and/or manufacturers brands available.
8.2.1 Level D PPE
The Level D ensemble provides minimal levels of skin protection (primarily against physical rather than
chemical hazards), and no respiratory protection.
Level D Equipment List
Hard hat
Safety glasses/faceshield
Safety -toe work boots
Hearing protection (as required)
Full -face air purifying respirator (available for emergency use).
8.2.2 Modified Level D PPE
The Modified Level D ensemble provides moderate skin protection -against chemical contact, but no
respiratory protection.
Modified Level D Enuinment List
Chemical -resistant disposable outer coveralls (e.g., Tyvek"" or poly -coated Tyvek"m coveralls)
Chemical -resistant (e.g., nitrile) outer gloves (taped to outer coveralls)
Chemical -resistant (e.g., nitrile) inner gloves
Butyl apron (optional, for use where splash potential is high)
hslproj s¢plcominachasp.doc
02/09/98
