G <br />General Safety Rules for Contractors <br />Housekeeping <br />Material should be carefully stacked and located so. <br />that it does not block aisles, doors, self-contained <br />breathing .apparatus, fire extinguishers, fire blankets, <br />stretchers, emergency eyewash fountains, emergency <br />safety showers, fixed ladders, stairways, or electrical <br />breaker panels. <br />- Nails protruding from boards 'must be <br />removed or bent over. <br />- All work areas shall be kept clear of form. <br />and scrap lumber and all other debris. <br />Combustible scrap, waste materials, and <br />debris shall be removed" at regular and <br />frequent intervals. <br />Containers shall be provided for the <br />collection and separation of refuse by type. <br />Covers shall be provided on containers used <br />for flammable, combustible, or harmful <br />substances. <br />- Overhead storage of debris, tools, <br />equipment, pipes, etc., is prohibited.. <br />At the end of each work dayy, Contractor <br />shall provide for pick up of all debris such <br />as paper, rags, empty cans and bottles, etc. <br />Ladders <br />The use of ladders with broken or missing rungs or <br />steps, broken or split handrails, or with other, faulty or <br />defective construction is prohibited: <br />- Ladders must not be placed` adjacent to a <br />door unless the door is locked or guarded. <br />- Metal ladders shall not be used for electrical <br />work. <br />- Tie off top of ladder to structure <br />Medical Service and First Aid <br />Emergency Medical Service. Preplanned <br />emergency medical service shall be provided as <br />designated by Contractor and approved by the <br />EARTH TECH Representative. <br />First Aid Kit. Each Contractor shall provide a first <br />aid kit for his employees which meets minimum <br />OSHA requirements. <br />Mobile Cranes <br />Mobile cranes, including portable crane derricks, <br />power shovels, or similar equipment, shall not -be <br />operated within ten feet of overhead electrical power <br />lines. <br />Overhead Work <br />No overhead work shall be performed when, as a <br />result of that work, the possibility of a falling object <br />striking any -person exists. Do not work above any <br />person at any time. <br />Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment <br />In certain construction and maintenance operations, <br />personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, <br />chemicalgoggles, , respirators,, .hard hats, -and <br />protective clotting is required. The type of protective <br />equipment to be worn will be: determined by the <br />degree of exposure to the , potential hazard. - There <br />will be very few occasions' when hard hats and eye <br />protection will not be required at EARTH TECH job <br />sites. When in doubt of the safety measures to be <br />observed, Contractor shall contact the EARTH.TECH <br />Health and Safety Section. This shall not, however, <br />relieve Contractor of his responsibilities to determine <br />appropriate protection. <br />Eye protection is required, when engaging in such <br />operations as the following: <br />- Drilling, chipping, grinding, wire brushing <br />- . Handling caustics and acids <br />Breaking bricks or concrete <br />- Hammering chisels, drift pins, etc. <br />- Burning or welding <br />- Other situations which create a possible eye <br />hazard, e.g., chemical environments. <br />Photographs <br />Only EARTH TECH photographers, with permission <br />from DIPEF, are permitted`to carry cameras or take <br />pictures. If progress or finished construction <br />photographs are desired, re'quest.for same should be <br />made through the EARTH TECH Representative. <br />Power Tools <br />s� <br />Power and Air -Actuated Tools. Gasoline -powered, <br />electric, or air -actuated tools are not to be used on <br />EARTH TECH property or job sites without prior <br />approval of the EARTH TECH Health and Safety <br />Department. To obtain approval, Contractor 'must <br />contact the EARTH TECH Representative. <br />Explosive -Actuated .Tools. Explosive -actuated <br />(powder -actuated) fastening tools shall meet the <br />design requirements in "American National Standard <br />Safety Requirements for Ex losive-Actuated <br />Fastening Tools" (ANSI A10.3-1970). A tool which <br />does not meet these design standards cannot be used. <br />- Power tools shall never be left unattended in <br />a place where they would be available to <br />unauthorized persons. <br />Power tools shall not be used in explosive or <br />flammable atmospheres. <br />a' <br />Fall Protection <br />Appropriate fall protection, such as safety harness <br />and. lanyard, must be worn when worker is exposed <br />to falling more than 8 feet.ALanyard or lifeline must <br />be tied off to appropriate structure capable of <br />supportingg five - times the weight of the person <br />(nominal 1000 pounds). <br />GSRC-6 Revised - February 9, 1998 <br />
