NZW1
23 June 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1015
approval of the requested sampling locations.Following SJCEHD approval, eight soil samples (ST-
1, DB-2, LL-3 through LL-8) and one groundwater sample (WS-9) were collected at the specified
locations. Soil samples were collected using a Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with four
pre-cleaned 1.125-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves. One sleeve of each soil sample was preserved by
covering both ends of the brass sleeve with Teflon sheets, capping, and sealing with tape. Sample
ST-1 was angled at approximately 45 degrees to reach the area directly below the septic tank. Water
sample WS-9 was collected using a temporary PVC screen. The hollow steel rods utilized in boring
ST-1 were pulled out, and a screened casing was inserted into the saturated zone. Ground water was
allowed to enter the casing, and samples were retrieved using a modified PVC tubing bailer.
All samples were properly labeled, placed in a chilled container and transported under chain-of-
custody to Cal Tech Environmental Laboratory a State of California Department of Health Services
(DHS)-certified laboratory. The samples were analyzed for:
• Total oil and grease and total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons (TRPH) in accordance
with EPA Method 418.1; and
• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in accordance with EPA Method 8260B.
LABORATORY RESULTS
TRPH was detected in soil sample DB-2 at a concentration of 12 mg/kg. No other target analytes
were reported at concentrations above the detection limits.
Copies of the laboratory report(CTEL Proj ect No: CT214-0306117)and chain-of-custody form are
included in Appendix A.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the results of this investigation,AGE recommends that no fiuther action be required at this
site and the site be closed and removed from the Groundwater ProtectionlUnderground Injection
Control Program. AGE recommends that the needed repairs to the septic system be performed as
requested by permit application submitted to SJCEHD.
LIMITATIONS
Our professional services were performed using that degree of care and skill ordinarily exercised by
environmental consultants practicing in this or similar localities.
