Half of the drum has leaked, and a large wet spot is visible on the floor. What should you do?
a.) Who would you notify? (Supervisor? Facilities Personnel? Fire Department?)
b.) Do you have the equipment (mops, absorbents, etc.) required to respond to the spill?
c.) Is there any chance of a fire? Should you evacuate the building?
d.) How would you handle the materials collected during the clean up?
Planning ahead for emergencies is good business practice. It is also required by several different
safety and environmental regulations. Planning for emergencies assures that we will have the
equipment and training required to handle emergencies that may arise.
Each business unit has an emergency plan in place which details the procedures to be followed in the
event of an emergency such as a chemical spill, fire, or a medical emergency. The plan should
include step-by-step procedures and should be coordinated with the local fire department if
necessary. Although most of us are not emergency responders, each of us needs to be trained on
certain portions of the plan. This week's safety meeting covers the basics that everyone needs to
know. In addition, anyone who actually handles chemicals will receive further training on their
responsibilities under this emergency plan as well as special training on the requirements of
regulations covering hazardous waste.
Exercise: Attached is a sheet listing potential problems and how we should respond to them.
Present these situations to the people in your group. Discuss the correct answers and direct any
questions to the safety department.
IL Safety concerns raised and addressed:
III.
