HANDLING AND DISPOSAL OF
DRUMMED HAZARDOUS WASTE AND UNIVERSAL WASTE AT
SIMS METAL
Training Outline
June 2006, revised September 2007
Training Provided by Robin R. Spencer, CHMM, R.E.A.
Introduction
Definition of Hazardous Waste: Identify Waste Streams
Definition of Universal Waste: Identify Waste Streams
Definition of a Hazardous Material
HAZARDOUS WASTE
❑ All drums that receive hazardous waste must be in good condition and capable of
transport according to DOT regulations.
❑ All drums must be labeled, with accumulation start date, contents, and with at
least company name. The remainder of the label can be filled out at time of
transport to the disposal facility, although it is recommended that as much of the
label be completed as possible at the moment the drum is put into service.
❑ When in the process of accumulating waste, the drum must be covered when not
in use, either with a temporary lid or with the cover and drum ring. If the drum
ring and cover must be kept in place, keep them on loosely to encourage use.
❑ If the waste is oily debris (absorbent material, pads, booms, etc.), use the
absorbent material as much as possible before declaring it a waste. This can be
accomplished by using a small amount of absorbent on a spill and turn it over and
mix it in until it is black and fully used. A small amount of fresh absorbent can be
used as a polishing step. Any usable absorbent MUST be placed into the "reusable
absorbent" drum.
❑ Drums of solid waste must have NO FREE LIQUIDS. This means any soupy
waste (sludge) must have, if needed, an equal amount of absorbent mixed in.
❑ The drums must be filled to the top. It is recommended that 2-4 inches of granular
absorbent be added to fill the waste to the top in order to absorb any free liquids
that may be generated during transport.
