Monthly Grab
Oil and grease
' • Gold Bond has had no significant problems in complying with
requirements for the above parameters .
Identified Concerns
Regional Board staff sampled the cooling water reservoirs on two
• occasions in 1985. In the first samples taken in May, 1985 high
levels of the following chlorinated organics and phthalates were
detected based on EPA Method 624 ( Purgeable Organics ) and 625
(Base/Neutral and Extractables) analyses:
Chlorinated Organics
•
1 ,1 , 2 - trichloroethane
1 , 1 , 2, 2 - tetrachloroethane
1 , 1 - dichloroethylene
Phthalates
•
2 - ethylhexyl phthalate
butylbenzyl phthalate
di-n-butyl phthalate
di-n-octyl phthalate
• In the September, 1985 samples , EPA Method 601 analyses were
performed. Results of this sampling and analysis indicated that
the above three halocarbons which were high in May were below a
detection limit of 0.5 ug/l in September. The EPA 601 analysis
does not test for phthalates .
• Based on the May sampling results, the Regional Board has
requested testing of the supply wells and the "hot side"
reservoir to assess the presence of undesirable levels of
chlorinated organics and phthalates in the cooling water
discharge. The Regional Board has also requested that an
assessment be made of the potential for formation of chlorinated
• compounds through the cooling water chlorination process and the
potential contamination of the cooling water with chlorinated
solvents .
Discussion
• With only two samplings in hand, it is not possible to assess
either the existence, magnitude or cause of the identified
problem. As the Regional Board has recommended, the proper
course of action is to take additional samples to determine the
extent of the problem, if any. until results from this sampling
• are available, the assessment of potential causes for the problem
is largely conjecture.
• 6
