amounts of paper from the storage yard were <br /> trapped on the chain link fence. <br /> ( 2 ) Three yard drains were inspected. The drains <br /> • consist of 24 inch diameter cast iron grates <br /> mounted on vertical risers. Slotted grate <br /> openings were 3/4 to 1 inch wide. The drains were <br /> shallow, ranging in depth from two to three feet. <br /> Paper accumulations were noted on each drain <br /> • grate, with one grate totally blinded. Flow <br /> through the blinded grate was negligible. <br /> ( 3 ) The invert of each yard drain had an accumulation <br /> of pulp below the grate. This apparently results <br /> from the wetting and gradual deterioration of <br /> • waste paper which collected on the grate. The <br /> pulp is heavy and has a pasty consistency; it <br /> would not be expected to "flow" through the drain <br /> piping. No evidence exists of pulp flowing from <br /> the yard to the drain inlets . <br /> • Based on the above observations, it is concluded that the waste <br /> paper storage yard is not a significant source of either waste <br /> paper or paper pulp to McDougald Slough. Minor amounts of paper <br /> pulp which does enter the yard drain system during the winter <br /> appears to be trapped at the drain inlets. <br /> • Recommended Action <br /> The gradual accumulation of pulp below the drainage grates will <br /> eventually result in the blockage of flow from these drains. To <br /> prevent this occurence, and to eliminate any potential for <br /> • transmission of pulp to the slough, it is recommended that the <br /> immediate areas around the drain inlets be policed to minimize <br /> paper accumulation on the grates. Also, it is recommended that <br /> the drain inverts be inspected once or twice per winter for <br /> removal of accumulated pulp. <br /> • SOLID WASTE CHARACTERIZATION <br /> System Description <br /> Solid wastes from the Gold Bond operation are collected in <br />• storage bins (dumpsters) at various locations within the plant. <br /> Solid wastes include both dry refuse and wet solid residues with <br /> an average solids content of 10 to 20 percent. Approximately <br /> 1600 cubic yards of the wet residues are generated each month. <br /> These residues are collected in five different 20 cubic yard <br /> bins. Approximately 75 to 85 per cent of these residues are <br />• generated from the screens preceding the No. 1 (wallboard) paper <br /> machine, with 5 to 10 percent from the pulpers for the No. 2 <br /> machine and the remainder from the janitorial bin. <br />• 16 <br />
