• <br />HAZ-MAT GENERAL INFORMATION - MSDS <br />� MOOMMUNInERS4 <br />0PICK-fF1idERYI[E IU70 B <br />As an auto -dismantlers we are faced with the fact that employees and customers are exposed to <br />a variety of materials coming from vehicles and their parts, such as gasoline, used automotive <br />oils, batteries, etc. These materials are composed of different chemicals. Different aspects of <br />these chemicals are listed and described in a standard form called Material Safety Data Sheet <br />(MSDS). <br />The MSDS is the primary means used to convey the necessary information about chemicals <br />composing materials we use and come in contact with and what their risks are. Employees <br />must be trained on how to read and MSDS and what information they provide. Manufacturers <br />and distributors are responsible for providing MSDS sheets. An MSDS must provide at least <br />the following eleven (11) items of information: <br />1) Substance Identification: <br />Helps you identify the substance by listing the name, trade name and manufacturer name <br />& address. Sometimes it includes emergency phone numbers. <br />2) Hazardous Ingredients: <br />Lists any substances that can harm you. It also lists the concentration to which you can <br />be safely exposed to, based on exposure through a typical work shift. <br />3) Physical Hazards: <br />Describes the appearance and other characteristics of the substance. <br />4) Health Hazards: <br />This section lists symptoms of overexposure to look for. It also gives you first aid and <br />emergency procedures in case of overexposure. It may list medical conditions that may <br />be aggravated by exposure to the substance. <br />5) Fire & Explosion Data: <br />Here you can find at what temperature the substance ignites (called Flash Point). It tells <br />you if the substance is flammable, combustible and what kind of extinguishing media is <br />required to neutralize a fire. <br />6) Reactivity Data: Here it describes any materials or conditions to which the substance <br />may react with, through the categories of incompatibility or instability. <br />
