P/CKIQ PULL
Damaged Battery Management Policy
Purpose: To ensure "damaged" lead acid batteries are managed properly thereby minimizing potential
releases of pollutants and employee exposure to pollutants associated with lead acid batteries. (as
required by CCR 66266.80 and the CA DTSC Fact Sheet, Management of Spent Lead Acid
Batteries)
Scope: All non retail, used battery recycling processes in Pick N Pull's "De Garbage" process.
Procedure:
1) While removing used batteries from salvage vehicles batteries must be inspected to separate "damaged
batteries" from intact batteries.
2) A "damaged battery" means: "any cracked or otherwise damaged lead acid battery that may leak acid
including .... a batter that is missing one or more caps" This can also include batteries that do not appear
damaged but have severe corrosion indicating a possible leak.
3) Damaged batteries can still be shipped with intact batteries as long as special measures are taken to
prevent any leaking fluids from inadvertently being released.
4) Damaged batteries shall be wrapped in a heavy duty Polyethylene trash baQ that is tied shut. These
batteries can then be shipped with the other non damaged, spent lead acid batteries.
5) Battery pallets shall be labeled with a "Used Battery" label including the accumulation start date.
