CWC 352: Other Organic Solids <br />Site <br />2006 Quantity (lb) <br />2010 quantity (lb) <br />LLNL <br />22,663 <br />12,840 <br />LBNL <br />7,203 <br />4,775 <br />SNUCA <br />2,027 <br />1,037 <br />Primary waste generators: <br />For LLNL <br />10.1 LLNL CWC 352 Wastes <br />LLNL included CWC 352 wastes in the 2007 SB 14 plan, although none of the separate <br />processes generated more than 2 percent of the total LLNL waste stream and therefore <br />were under SB14 reporting threshold. The total of all CWC 352 wastes generated has <br />dropped from 22,663 lbs in 2006 to 12,840 lbs in 2010. This waste stream is comprised <br />of a number of small, unrelated processes and continues to not be a major waste stream <br />category for LLNL wastes. <br />Note that the 2010 waste volume is below the SB14 reporting threshold and so this waste <br />stream is not carred forward into the 2011 SB14 Plan. <br />For LBNL <br />10.2 Pressure Treated Lumber <br />A significant portion of the waste stream is pressure treated lumber. This material is used <br />in a variety of wood structures at the LBL. The waste stream also consists of kimwipes, <br />paper towels, gloves, pipette tips, and plastics contaminated with organic materials. <br />In 2006, this waste was primarily pressure treated lumber. In the past four years, less of <br />this material was purchased in favor of engineered materials. <br />For SNL <br />10.3 Solvent Debris <br />Solvent debris is generated by different operations around the site. In 2006 the largest <br />generators of solvent debris wasthe Paint Shop. Other major generators of solvent debris <br />were the Biosystems Research Department and Materials Chemistry Department. The <br />remaining solvent debris was small volumes generated at various laboratories throughout <br />the site. In April 2009 the SNUCA site management decided to close the Paint Shop, <br />that eliminated most of solvent contaminated wipes. The closure of the Paint Shop has <br />resulted in the reduction of solvent debris generation in 2010 at SNUCA.11. <br />CWC 551: Laboratory Waste Chemicals <br />Site 12006 Quantity (lb) 12010 quantity (lb) <br />SNUCA 112,357 J 8,977 <br />LBNL 13,151 15,556 <br />Primary waste generators: <br />For SNUCA <br />11.1 Laboratory Waste Chemicals <br />Laboratory waste chemicals are generated from different operations around the site. In <br />2006 some of the largest generators were the Maintenance -Engineering, Materials <br />Chemistry Department, Biosystems Research Department, Material Physics Department, <br />and the Engine Combustion Laboratory. Also in 2006 SNUCA conducted a site -wide <br />cleanout to reduce site -wide chemicals by 5%. The cleanout in 2006 generated 3100 lbs <br />of laboratory waste chemicals. In April 2009 the SNUCA site management decided to <br />close the Paint Shop. The closure of the Paint Shop has resulted in the reduction of the <br />generation of laboratory waste chemicals at SNUCA. In addition SNUCA did not <br />conduct a major site wide cleanout in CY10. Note, several organizations throughout the <br />site conducted small cleanouts however these did not generate a large volume of <br />laboratory waste chemicals. <br />11.2 SNUCA Firine Ranee <br />SNUCA has a firing range used for training purposes. After personnel have completed <br />training activities, they washed their hands (with soap and water) to remove any residues <br />from handling ammunition and/or firing handguns. Wash water was containerized and <br />transported off-site for disposal as a hazardous waste. Through September 2006, <br />SNUCA determined (using process knowledge) that this waste stream is <br />characteristically hazardous for lead. In September 2006 SNUCA completed its <br />evaluation to reduce the lead contamination in the wash water by having the Protective <br />Force wipe their hands with an alcohol -free wipe prior to washing their hands. <br />Analytical analyses confirmed the concentration of lead was below the hazardous waste <br />limit and therefore, not deemed a California hazardous waste. It was determined that the <br />wastewater can be released into the sanitary sewer and will not exceed the local POTW <br />discharge limits.
