The waste stream is typically an oil sludge that is generated in a gravity oil -water <br />separator. The waste results from cleaning of soiled vehicles and equipment. <br />Soiled vehicles and equipment are steam cleaned for proper maintenance and to provide <br />clean working conditions and safe reuse of equipment. OILY AND SOLVENT SOLID DEBRIS WASTE GENERATION PROCESS AND <br />FLOW DIAGRAM <br />Hazardous Waste and Process Description <br />This waste stream is generated in the forms of: <br />• Replacement of old air compressor and air desiccant systems with two newer ones <br />at Buildings 7 and 23 <br />• Oily rags or wipes to cleanup equipment and machines that are identified above in <br />waste stream CWC 221 <br />• Rags used for cleaning of tools <br />• Absorbents and rags from machines that inherently release oil during metal <br />machining operations or from machines that leak <br />• Miscellaneous oily solids from old containers, cleaning of sumps, roofing and <br />tarring operations, and other similar activities, <br />Two compressor systems were replaced that generated approximately 4,000 pounds of <br />oily and solvent solids. These new systems will generate significantly less oily and <br />solvent solid waste in the future and desiccants are expected to last for several years. <br />PREVENTION <br />Additional pollution prevention training has been incorporated into SLAC hazardous <br />waste management training to encourage employees to consider waste reduction <br />measures in their activities. Additionally, the SLAC Waste Management Group <br />encourages employees to assess opportunities to reduce waste generation in their <br />work areas.
