REMEDIAL OPERATIONS
Cardno ERI installed an AS/SVE remedial system at the site during first quarter 2012. On March 27, 2012,
Cardno ERI started the SVE system for compliance testing, as required by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution
Control District (SJVAPCD). The SVE system was shut down pending laboratory results. On April 9, 2012, the
SVE system was started for continuous operation. Operation of the AS system began on May 8, 2013.
The AS/SVE system consists of an 11.5-horsepower regenerative blower capable of a maximum flow rate of
350 cfm; 11 SVE wells; an electric catalytic oxidizer; an AS air compressor capable of providing up to 10 cfm
ambient air to 11 AS wells at timed intervals; and associated conveyance piping, noise abatement equipment,
control devices, and instrumentation. The AS/SVE system extracts soil vapor from up to 11 SVE wells (SVE1,
SVE2, SVE4, SVE5, VEW1S, VEW1D, VEW2S, VEW2D, VEW3, VEW4, and MW4) and uses eight AS wells
(AS1, AS2S through AS6S, DW1, and DW3) to inject ambient air into the shallow aquifer and five AS wells
(AS2D through AS6D) to inject ambient air into the deep aquifer. Soil vapor is treated through an electric
catalytic oxidizer prior to discharge into the atmosphere under SJVAPCD Permit to Operate No. N-8251
(permit). Cardno ERI performs system maintenance and monitors the system as required by the permit.
Cardno ERI collects vapor samples for laboratory analysis to evaluate system performance and calculate
hydrocarbon removal rates.
During the reporting period, influent TPHg concentrations ranged from 1,200 mg/m3 to 2,600 mg/m3. Cardno
ERI initiated operation of the shallow AS wells on October 1, 2013. The AS system is currently operating on all
AS wells. Cardno ERI will continue to evaluate operation of the AS system to maximize mass removal by
adjusting timed sparge intervals to the operating AS wells.
