SER` S- 2812092399132;# 1/ 1
fE®
C® JUN - 9 2000LHNMENTT
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
PERMIT / SERVICES
June 9, 2000
Jeffry Rose
Qualex, Inc.
555 Industrial Park Drive
Manteca, CA 95337
SUBJECT: Acute Aquatic Toxicity Testing of Photoprocessing Waste Streams
Dear Mr. Rose:
This letter is in response to your questions concerning the California Title 22 acute aquatic
toxicity testing of waste photoprocessing solutions.
Acute aquatic toxicity testing of the waste solutions (spent developer overflow and
washwater)from representative Kodak color photoprocesses was completed by EA
Engineering, Science, and Technology, a California Department of health Services Certified
Laboratory. The resulting 96-11our LC50 test results indicated that such color waste streams
do not exhibit the characteristic of toxicity(96-hour i.CSO values less than 500 mg/1 are
considered toxic) and is therefore non-hazardous as defined by California Title 22 acute
aquatic toxicity criteria, in fact, there was no observed effect on the fish exposed to the waste
processing solutions for the 96-hour testing period.
Waste solutions (spent developer overflow and washwater)from representative Kodak black
and white photoprocesses were tested by Eastman Kodak Company in its aquatic toxicity
laboratory using nearly identical test procedures (the only changed variable was water
hardness). These tests also show that such black and white waste streams do not exhibit the
characteristic of toxicit and is therefore non-hazardous as defined by California Title 22
acute aquatic toxicity criteria.
If you have further questions regarding this issue, please contact Kodak Environmental
Services at (716)477-3194.
Thank you for using Kodak products.
Kodak Environmental Services
Eastman Kodak Company
Rochester,NY 146.52-6255
0131/2-98
