Rosa STANDARD LABORATORY OPERATING PROCEDURES 5/10/2010 2 <br /> Volume A General Operations <br /> A-13 Laboratory Liquids Handling and Recycling <br /> Use appropriated PPE and safety precautions <br /> Appropriate PPE includes long sleeved lab coat, vinyl apron (optional), <br /> neoprene chemical gloves, goggles, face shield, and if you are going out into the plant, <br /> the face shield must fit onto your hard hat and earplugs are required. <br /> Neutralization of liquid test solutions <br /> 1. All lab liquids going down the drains must be neutralized, pH 6-8 is ideal, <br /> but pH 5-9 is acceptable. Neutralize no more than 1 gallon at a time. <br /> 2. Neutralize acidic solutions with 10-40% NaOH. <br /> 3. Neutralize basic (caustic) solutions with 50% H2SO4. Plant acid may <br /> be carefully diluted for this purpose. <br /> 4. Perform initial neutralizations in a fume hood; fine tuning may be done on <br /> the lab laench near the pH meter. <br /> 5. The wide range pH indicator solution from Microessential Laboratories may <br /> be used for clear to nearly clear solutions as a visual indicator with green be <br /> close to pH 7.0. <br /> 6. The CFA, AA, and Flame Photometer solutions are to be captured in <br /> a glass or plastic bottle, neutralized and then discarded down the drain with <br /> flushing. <br /> 7. Digested samples and diluted samples are to be treated as in step 6. <br /> 8. Kjeldahl test solution from the distillation step is still caustic and hot; cool to <br /> room temperature and dilute before neutralizing. Discard neutral solution <br /> down drain with flushing. <br /> 9.
