DUDEK Se ASSOCIATES, INC. 605 Third Street
Encinitas,CA 92024
x_ (619)942-5147• Fax No.(619)632A164
450-10
February 8, 1994
Mr. Douglas P. O'Neal Ms. Polly Lowry, Assoc. Engineering Geologist
Department of Toxic Substances Control California Regional Water Quality Control Board
California Environmental Protection Agency Central Valley Region
10151 Croydon Way 3443 Routier Road, Suite A
Sacramento, CA 5827 Sacramento, CA 95827-3088
Re Proposal to Install Additional Wells at the Kearney KPF Facility, Stockton California
Dear Mr. O'Neal and Ms. Lowry:
Dudek and Associates, Inc. (Dudek)on behalf of Kearney-National Inc.(Kearney)proposes to install
two additional wells and three additional piezometers at the Kearney KPF facility located at 1624
East Alpine Avenue, Stockton, California (the facility). These wells and piezometers are proposed
both in response to comments made by the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) at a
meeting at the facility on October 27, 1993, and in order to accelerate the remediation of the
groundwater. Computer simulations predict that the proposed extraction wells may reduce
remediation time by six years. The piezometers will provide better information on groundwater
levels in the middle of the remedial well field during pumping and may assist in understanding the
vertical conductivity between the shallow zone and the upper intermediate zone.
Extraction Wells
Dudek proposes to install two additional extraction wells in the upper intermediate zone of the
aquifer in the vicinity of well KI-5. These wells will be installed approximately 50 feet northwest
and 100 feet southwest of well KI-5 (Figure 1). It is intended that these additional extraction wells
will also extract water from the same sand lens that well KI-5 does. According to the lithologic log
of exploratory borehole KSH-3 located adjacent to well KI-5, this sand lens is located between
approximately 92 feet below land surface (bls) and 108 feet bls (Attachment 1).
The proposed extraction wells will be constructed of four inch internal diameter PVC casing
installed in approximately 10.5-inch diameter boreholes (Figure 2). The wells will be drilled using
conventional mud rotary methods. The wells will be constructed with 15 foot lengths of PVC wire
wrap screen. In order to maximize well efficiency, the sand filter pack size and PVC wire wrap
screen opening width will be determined by sieve analysis of core samples. A sand filter pack will
be installed in the annulus between the screen and borehole wall from approximately 90 feet bls to
108 feet bks. A layer of 1/4 inch bentonite pellets will be placed on top of the filter pack after airlift
development of the well. The remainder of the annulus will be filled with a bentonite grout such
as Volclay. The wells will be equipped with electric submersible pumps capable of producing 40
to 70 gallons per minute (gpm).
princed.,recycled paper
