Doug O'Neal • •
April 24, 2002
Page 3
assessment, wells SMW-1 through SMW-6 are identified as monitoring wells to be sampled
under MRP 5-01-269 (effective as of December 7, 2001).
The 2001 Annual Report and a December 14, 2001 letter from the facility indicate that well
TP-3A could not be sampled during the fourth quarter 2001 sampling event because a bailer
became lodged in the well casing. GSU would appreciate an update on the status of this
well.
In January 2002, the facility provided a status report (Dudek 2002) on the protective
measures for the monitoring network that were to be implemented after DTSC approval
(DTSC 2001b). GSU would appreciate an updated status report regarding the protective
measures.
As summarized in Table 1 (attached), elevated final turbidity measurements were identified
in four wells during the fourth quarter 2001. However, only well KEW-4U is recommended
for redevelopment. As discussed in DTSC (2002), wells with elevated turbidity
measurements (e.g., greater than 5 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU)) require an
adjustment in the purging/sampling procedures or maintenance (e.g., redevelopment).
Wells that cannot consistently produce low turbidity groundwater samples, representative of
subsurface conditions, must be decommissioned and replaced.
Table 3 and Appendix E of the 2001 Annual Report provide tabulated summaries of volatile
organic compounds detected in groundwater samples. To facilitate GSU's review, Table 3
of the 2002 Annual Report should summarize all analytical results (detects and non-detects)
for samples collected during the 2002 reporting year. It would be helpful if the 2002 Annual
Report includes a comprehensive tabulated summary of historical analytical data (including
non-detected results). This tabulated summary could be submitted either as an appendix or
electronically (Excel format).
REFERENCE
DTSC. 2001 a.
