Waste disposal from the manufacturing
process has resulted in ground water contamination with volatile organic compounds. A ground water
extraction and treatment system has been in operation at the facility since 1992 with treated ground water
being discharged to an injection well. Waste Discharge Requirements (WDRs) were adopted in 1991 for
the treatment system. As part of the WDRs, Monitoring and Reporting Program (MRP)No. 91-220
established monitoring requirements for the startup and full-scale phases of the treatment system,
extraction wells, observation wells, and injection well. This monitoring program revises MRP No. 91-220.
GROUND WATER MONITORING
There are 23 ground water monitoring wells, six piezometers, five extraction wells, one shallow supply
well, and one injection well as shown in Figure 1. All annual monitoring shall be conducted during the
quarter of highest anticipated ground water elevations.
Prior to construction, plans and specification for ground water monitoring and/or extraction wells shall be
submitted to Board staff for review and approval. After construction, new wells are to be sampled and
analyzed for the constituents below and added to the monitoring program.
Extraction Well Monitoring
During extraction of ground water from extraction wells KI-3, KI-5, KI-6, KEW-3, and KEW-4 the
following monitoring program shall be conducted:
Type of Sampling
Constituents Ui i Sample FreQuency
Volatile Organic Compounds µg/l Grab Q
(Method 8010 or 601)
Electrical Conductivity (Field) µmhos/cm Grab Q
Total Dissolved Solids mg/l Grab A
pH(Field) pH units Grab Q
Temperature (Field) Celsius Grab Q
Total Volume of Water Extracted gallons Continuous Q
Extraction Rate at Time of Sampling gpm Grab Q
Average Extraction Rate(last 7 days) gpm Continuous Q
Pressure at Time of Sampling psig Grab Q
Water Level ft msl Grab Q
