We have several concerns with the
proposal which are outlined in the staff memorandum. Specifically, you should
consider changing the proposal with respect to the following items.
1. Relocate a portion of deep soil borings to determine the vertical extent of
hazardous waste contamination in the unsaturated zone in the drainage area
south of the galvanizing building and in Pond 2N. The boring in Pond 2N
may be delayed but must be performed prior to closure.
2. Installation of an additional monitoring well in the shallow water bearing
zone near Pond 1 and the dry well . If analytical results of ground water
samples from this well indicate there is heavy metal contamination,
additional monitoring wells will be requied to define the vertical and
lateral extent of contamination.
3. Installation of additional monitoring wells (intermediate and deep) to form
a cluster site to the east/southeast of Pond 2N where the highest volatile
organic constituents in ground water have been detected.
4. Installation of a monitoring well cluster site within 100 feet of the
septic tank and leachfields should not be performed.
We request that a three-day notification be given prior to commencement of the
different field activities.
