During the year, the automotive business in Europe achieved corporate certification to <br /> this standard covering 18 sites in eight countries. In Spain the Glapilk float glass plant received certification. <br /> In line with the process of continuous improvement, environmental data is kept under review and Improved <br /> information is incorporated when this becomes available. <br /> Partnership with government <br /> Pilkington continues to work, both directly and through trade associations representing the glass Industry, with <br /> governments and the European Commission on key environmental Issues such as the End of Life Vehicles <br /> Directive, Climate Change and the proposed directive on carbon trading. <br /> Discussions within European member states on the introduction of a voluntary approach to carbon trading, as a <br /> precursor to a compulsory scheme, and on the allocation of allowances, are being monitored. <br /> The Group supports the principle that allocation of allowances should be free and that existing voluntary <br /> agreements should continue for as long as practicable. Pllkington supports the Idea of carbon trading in <br /> principle, and, in addition, would like to see clear mechanisms to promote the use of energy saving products <br /> and to allocate allowances that benefit the production of such products. <br /> Working with suppliers <br /> The Group uses a life cycle analysis of the float glass process as the basis for collaboration with suppliers, with <br /> the aim of jointly reducing adverse effects on the environment.
