F
HazWaste Accumulation Area Set Up, continued
Action
• The Hazardous Waste category label should be placed on both the lids and bodies of the drums.
• The drums must be lined up with the side labels facing the same direction.
• Transferring HazWaste to the new drums:
o Ensure associates are wearing the necessary PPE.
o Properly categorize, bag, and seal each HazWaste item in the new drums. Multiples of the same
item may be bagged together.
o Transfer the existing accumulation start date from the old containers.
o After all the stickers and labels have been removed or defaced, the store can discard the old
drums with the non hazardous waste. (The drums must pass the no drip test before disposition.
Soak up any spillage at the bottom of the drum using absorbent pads or powders. Bag and place
absorbent waste inside the corresponding HazWaste drum.)
Safety Tips!
• Drums have the potential to become very heavy when filled with hazardous waste items. The safety of the
associates must be kept in mind as the stores decide where and how to position them.
• Associates should be able to unscrew the drum lids and place waste inside without having to move the entire
drum. If this is not possible due to the racking set up, drums should be placed on pallets for easier movement
and accessibility.
• Associates should always ask for assistance from another associate when moving any bulky or heavy item.
Drums will be used for waste storage, by category of waste. In some instances, the size of the waste storage drums
may have to be adjusted depending on the waste volume generated by the store.
Prelabeled Drums
The drums are prelabeled for the following es of hazardous waste items.
Exam le of Drum A
A Ignitable - Flammable liquids/solids —oil-based paint, Goo Gone, fingernail polish,
Pine Sol, butane lighters, cutting oil, and other flammable items that are not in
aerosol cans or compressed gas cylinders.
B Corrosive Basic — Drano crystals, ammonia, pool chemicals H increasers), etc.
C Corrosive Acidic — CLR, muriatic acid, Easy Off, pool chemicals (pH decreasers),
etc.
D Oxidizing —Tilex, Comet, bleach, pool chlorine, etc.
E ToxielPoison —Herbicides and insecticides, latex paint, detergents, pool chemicals
al aecides .
FGas cylinders — Proane, MAPP gas, etc.
G Aerosols — Spray aint, oven cleaner, Fix -a -Flat, etc.
H Paint - Waste Latex paint and stains.
Note: As noted in the diagram, universal waste containers (e.g., CFLs, fluorescent light bulb box, etc.) will be
stored in this area. The spill cart can also be stored in this area.
• Ensure each drum has the correct Hazardous Waste label.
• Always note the accumulation date. This date will be
preprinted by the vendor. The date will be the date of the
store's HazWaste pick up.
Note:
Labels preprinted by the vendor will include:
• Type of hazardous waste
• Physical state
• Type of hazard (i.e. Flammable, Toxic, etc)
• Name and address of the store
• EPA ID Number
• Accumulation start date
• Labels prepared by the store must also include the points
above.
Risk Management — Hazardous Waste Program Best Practice - Page 3 of 8 Issued: 8/22/11 POST UPON RECEIPT
