Site Safety Plan
Job No 4780200 Page 11
VII. CHEMICALS OF CONCERN
The potential effects of any exposure are dependent upon several factors,
including substance toxicity, time frame of exposure, concentration of
substance, general health of person exposed, and individual use of hazard
I reduction methods Each of the chemicals previously detected on the site is
discussed below.
A. Gasoline is a highly flammable mixture of volatile hydrocarbons, primarily
branched-chain paraffins, cycloparaffins and aromatics It has a
dangerous fire and explosion risk Diesel Oil is composed chiefly of
unbranched paraffins It has a moderate fire risk Both are derived from
Petroleum Oil, a clear, bright liquid with a mild petroleum odor, that
poses a moderate fire risk. Inhalation of excessive concentrations of
vapor or mist can be irritating to the respiratory passages and can cause
headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and loss of coordination.
Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause irritation
B. Benzene is a clear, colorless to (fight-yellow, highly flammable liquid of
dangerous fire risk with a characteristic odor. Acute toxicity (by
ingestion or inhalation) leads to irritation of the mucus membranes,
restlessness, convulsions, excitement and depression. Death may follow
from respiratory failure Harmful amounts may also be absorbed through
the skin Benzene is a known carcinogen
C. Toluene is a colorless, flammable liquid with a benzene-like odor and a
dangerous fire risk It is toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin
absorption High concentrations have narcotic effects.
D. Ethylbenzene is a colorless, flammable liquid with an aromatic odor that,
as a vapor, is heavier than air Irritating to the eyes, skin and mucous
membranes, it is toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption. It
poses a dangerous fire risk and is narcotic in high concentrations.
E. Xylenes are a commercial mixture of the three isomers, o-, m- and p-
xylene. It is a clear, flammable liquid with moderate fire risk, which is
Itoxic by inhalation and ingestion and may be narcotic at high
concentrations
IF. Diesel is a colorless flammable liquid that poses a moderate fire risk.
EzC, Inc. December 23, 1992
