0 ECS REFINING PAGE: DOCUMENT N i of z 200-0007-001 TITLE: REVISION Aerosol Can Puncturing Work Instruction CONFIDENTIAL B-11-26-2012 Job Description Puncture used aerosol paint cans that are no longer working to empty the contents so the container can be recycled and the contents properly managed as a hazardous waste. Department Shi in Receivin Job Summary Placing cans on puncture device, observing proper labeling of materials, properlycontainerizing materials Essential Job Labeling, segregation of materials, management of residuals. Functions Resources/ Universal waste labels, hazardous waste collection drum, aerosol can Equipment uncturinq device PPE (see also Safety glasses, Control Measures . - Optional. below below Task 1 Check the filter that catches the air emissions to ensure it does not need to be replaced. It is equipped with an indicator to tell when it needs to be replaced. See EH&S for a replacement. Task 2 Ensure no open flames or sources of heat are nearby. Task 3 Ensure the area is properly ventilated. Task 4 Ensure anti -static wire is installed—the alligator clip should be clipped onto round source. Task 5 Separate paint cans from Non -Paint cans. Puncture only paint cans. Non Paint Non empty cans are to be placed in a drum and labeled as a Universal Waste Non Empty aerosol can. Task 6 Check paint collection drum to ensure it is no more than 70% full. If it is more than 70% full, replace the drum with a new one. Put a new hazardous waste label and accumulation start date on the new drum. Task 7 Remove aerosol can cap prior to placing the can into the unit. Task 8 Place the can to be punctured nozzle side down into the unit. Task 9 Lower sliding top plate down to firmly engage top of can. Task 10 Slowly squeeze lever to puncture can and allow contents to drain into drum. Task 11 Allow contents to drain for 20 – 30 seconds. Task 12 Remove punctured can from the unit. Task 13 Accumulate empty cans as'Scra Metal'. Task 14 Clean area with shop rag and place shop rag in container for janitorial service to ick -u and service.
