Box 2157 Manteca, CA . 95336 July 27, 1982 Background The purpose of this inspection was to insure compliance with federal and state regulations concerning the use, storage and disposal of PCBs. Officials Present Michael B. Gathercoal , Factory Manager, Spreckles Sugar Jerry T. Tucker, Safety, Sanitation and Services, Spreckels Sugar Steve Posner, DOHS/HWMB, Sacramento Facility Description The Spreckles Sugar Division at Manteca is involved in the production of sugar and sugar syrups from sugar beets. When sugar beets arrive at the facility they are washed , sliced and pumped into tanks where sugar is diffused out at 80 degrees C. The pulp resulting from this process is pressed out, dried and made into cattle feed. Sugar juice, after extraction is pumped into carb tanks , non-sugars are ex- tracted at this time by the addition of lime. After the extraction process the sugar juice is pumped into evaporation tanks where moisture is removed and as a result the sugar juice is thickened. The thickened juice is now passed through carbon columns and liquid filters which extract colors and sediment. The boiling stage causes the sugar grains to come out of solution, these are separated from the syrup through the use of a centrifugal pump. The final products resulting from the boiling stage are molasses and white sugar which are sold as bulk products.
