BOX 2009
Stockton, Ca. 95201
Attn.: Mr. Spano
Gentlemen,
A function of the Manteca Chamber of Commerce as set forth in its By-Laws is ---
"that it shall work for the betterment of all phases of civic and community life
in the Manteca area, including its industry, agriculture, commerce, business and
residential areas. It shall consider and act as it sees fit on any legislation or
any other matter which might have some effect on the welfare of the Manteca area" -- .
At its monthly Board of Directors meeting, Wednesday, June lst, there was a lengthy
discussion regarding the several nuisance complaints filed against Spreckels Sugar
Company. The Board decided that it would be premature to take a position on this
matter until all facts of the situation were considered. Therefore, the Industrial
Committee of the Chamber has been requested to investigate and assemble as much factual
information on this situation as possible. This Committee has formed sub-committees
composed of leading citizens and long-time residents of the community and is to
report back to the Board as soon as possible, hopefully within two weeks. This would
then allow a thorough, in-depth, and knowledgeable consideration by the Board, which
could then act as it sees fit.
In the meantime, it is our earnest wish that all parties involved, such as your
Agency, do likewise and avoid taking hasty action that might be based on incomplete
or biased information. Spreckels Sugar has a tremendous economic impact on the well--
being of Manteca and its residents, and to interrupt their normal course of business
could have a marked and lasting influence on our community. It is an American tradition
that anyone with a legitimate grievance can air it, and rightfully so; but it is
also only proper that action be withheld until all aspects of a problem have been
heard and duly considered.
We hope that the results of our study on this subject will be thorough and meaningful
to the people of our community and those that may be required to take action.
Sincerely,
BOARD OF DIRECTORS,
MANTECA DISTRICT CLAMBER OF COMMERCE
By: Pete Boyce, President
C R O S S R O A D S 0 F C A L I F 0 R N I A
