A site plan showing the approximate locations of the pro-
posed wells is presented on Plate L
Soil borings were drilled on May 1, 13, and 14, 1985, using a truck
mounted drill rig equipped with 6-inch diameter continuous flight auger.
Occasional soil samples were obtained by pounding a split spoon sampler into the
soils using 140-pound hammer falling approximately 18 inches. Continuous logs
of the soils encountered in each boring were maintained in the field and are
presented on the Logs of Borings, Plates Ill, IV, and V.
In general, the soil conditions encountered in the three wells drilled
consisted of approximately 2 to 4 feet of dark-brown sandy silty clay at the
surface overlying mixtures of clayey sand and silt soils that extended to depths
varying from approximately 16 to 26 feet below existing ground surface. Below
these depths, with the exceptions of minor sandy and gravelly lenses the predo-
minate soil consisted of light tan-grey silty sandy clay extending to the maxi-
mum depth explored of from 50 to 90 feet below existing ground surface.
No free groundwater was encountered in Wells 1 or 3, however, some minor
seepage of water was noted in Well 3 in the sandy layers located above the clay.
The seepage was so little, however, that no free water was noted during the
period our crews were at the site. Groundwater was encountered at a depth of
approximately 29 feet in Well 2. We understand that in the production well
drilled for the existing facility, groundwater was encountered at over approxi-
mately 250-foot depth and rose to within approximately 50 to 60 feet of the sur-
face. It is our opinion that this artesian condition was caused by the thick
clay layer. If our borings were to penetrate this clay layer, it is likely that
groundwater would rise to similar depth as that of the production well. It is
our opinion that groundwater encountered in Well 2 is a perched groundwater
table resting on the clay layer.
OTHER OFFICES nom.
Walnut Creek . San Ramon .
