ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN THE EVENT OF A SPILL OR RELEASE <br /> The purpose of this procedure is to prescribe actions to be taken by designated personnel in <br /> the event of a hazardous material spill or release at Jackpot Food Mart Co. stores. <br /> PROCEDURES: <br /> I. Store Manager or Person on Dutv <br /> The Store Manager, or person on duty when there is a spill or release, shall immediately <br /> determine if the spill or release is 5 gallons or more. <br /> IF GREATER THAN 5 GALLONS: Follow Instructions for Major Spills or Releases. <br /> IF 5 GALLONS OR LESS: Follow Instruction for Small Spills or Releases. <br /> Determining the Size of the Spill: <br /> Spills and releases may occur at the dispenser, the nozzle, the underground storage tank <br /> during deliveries and at cars with leaks in their gas tanks. <br /> A dispenser spill generally occurs when a car "drives off' with the nozzle still in the tank <br /> of the car. A dispenser hose breaking away from coupling usually snaps shut when the <br /> hose breaks; this prevents too much gasoline for spilling. These spills are generally small <br /> (less than a gallon.) <br /> A nozzle spill generally occurs when an unattended nozzle with the "hold open" latch <br /> engaged falls our of the car's gasoline intake spout. If left unattended for more than a <br /> couple minutes, these spills can become significant (5 gallons or greater.) However, the <br /> "hold open" latch generally snaps shut when it hits the ground and limits the amount spilled <br /> to less than 5 gallons. The time: fuel dispensing estimate of 30 seconds; 5 gallon (about 6 <br /> seconds per gallon dispensed through the nozzle) should be used in this situation. <br /> A spill during a product delivery can range in size from a couple of gallons to several <br /> hundred. The flow rate of a gasoline drop from a 4" hose varies from 280 gallons per <br /> minute to 360 gallons per minute. <br /> A spill form a leaking car fuel tank can range in size from less than one gallon to up to <br /> about ten. The leaking orifice or fitting beneath the car is usually sufficient to limit the <br /> actual size to less than 5 gallons. <br /> Estimating the size of a spill by the surface area it covers is not advised since the surface of <br /> a parking lot is neither two dimensional or flat. <br /> HAZARD COMMUNICATION-6/01 10 <br /> S:/safery/hea1th&safety/h=wmdw <br />
