. ..W
The following presents a summary of the potential chemical and physical hazards
associated with the House located at project based on known conditions.
CHEMICAL HAZARDS
Total Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons
Exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons can produce narcotic effects such as dizziness,
headaches, and giddiness similar to alcohol intoxication. Petroleum hydrocarbons are
also an irritant to the mucous membranes and can irritate the eyes, throat, and skin.
Gasoline
Metals
The following summarizes the potential hazards associated with the detected metals.
Lead
Considerable data exist on the effects of lead exposure in humans. It is a poison by
ingestion and a suspected human carcinogen of the lungs and kidneys. There are data to
suggest that lead is a mutagen(agent causing fetal malformations)and can cause
reproductive effects. Human systemic effects by ingestion and inhalation(the two routes
of absorption) include: loss of appetite, anemia, malaise, insomnia, headache, irritability,
muscle and joint pains, tremors, flaccid paralysis without anesthesia, hallucinations and
distorted perceptions, muscle weakness, gastritis and liver changes.
Recent experimental evidence suggests that blood levels of lead below 10 micrograms
per deciliter(ug/dl)can have the effect of diminishing the IQ scores of children. The
current CAL-OSHA PEL for lead is 0.05 milligrams per cubic meter of air(mg/m3).
CAL-OSHA also required follow-up medical monitoring for all employees whose blood
levels are at or above 40 ug/dk.
Pesticides(agricultural activities around site)
The following summarize potential hazards associated with the pesticides.
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane
DDT is a white to gray crystalline solid used as an insecticide and pesticide to control
vectors of disease. Human systemic effects of exposure to DDT include eye and
respiratory irritation, nausea or vomiting, headache, and sweating. DDT targets the eyes,
respiratory system, nervous system and liver. DDT is listed as a suspected human
carcinogen and is a known animal carcinogen. The current CAL-OSHA PEL for DDT is
1 mg/m3.
91;
