' HIINICN-- IEBNEN
—
Mr. Charles Leubner
30 January 1991
Page 3
gallon diesel tank. These samples were collected at approximately 20 -foot intervals along
the length of the piping.
One sample was collected for analyses from the 500 -gallon gasoline tank. This sample was
collected from the approximate center of the excavation, at a depth of approximately two
feet into the native soil beneath the former location of the tank bottom.
LABORATORY ANALYSIS
The analytical program for the soil samples consisted of the following analyses, as specified
— by Letitia Resch of the San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health
Division included:
10.000 -Gallon Diesel Tank and Remote Fill Line:
Analysis
Method
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Diesel
GC -FID with soxhlet sample
—
preparation
Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and
EPA Method 8020
Xylenes
500 -Gallon Gasoline Tank:
Analysis
Method
— Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline
GC -FID with purge and trap sample
preparation
Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and
EPA Method 8020
Xylenes
Ethylene dibromide (EDB)
DOHS -AB 1803
Lead
Waste Extraction Test (WET)
At the same time that a sample was collected for laboratory analysis, a sample was
collected from the backhoe bucket to monitor for the presence of organic vapors. The
results of laboratory analyses and field monitoring for the presence of organic vapors is
shown in Tables 1.
Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel fuel were reported in four of the five samples
collected from the 10,000 -gallon diesel tank excavation (Table 1). When present, the diesel
concentrations ranged from 9.9 mg/Kg to 430 mg/Kg. The highest concentrations were
found in the sample collected from beneath the center of the slab in the bottom of the
excavation (430 mg/Kg in sample No. 025) and the sample collected from the northern side
of the tank excavation (290 mg/Kg in sample No. 017). Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
and xylenes concentrations were reported to be below the laboratory's limit of detection
