shaded area, given liquid, sprayed with water to lower body temperature and treated for shock
by elevating their feet. Monitoring for heat stress is described in Section 3.13.6. If site
conditions require an upgrade of PPE to Level C, heat stress monitoring shall include heart
rate, oral temperature, and, if possible, body water loss, as deemed necessary by the project
CIH. Body water loss will be measured by weighing the employee's weight on a scale
accurate to within 0.25 lb. at the beginning and end of each work day to determine if enough
fluids are being taken to prevent dehydration.
Workers shall also protect themselves from exposure to cold temperatures. Lower body
temperature may result in reduced mental alertness, irrational decision making, or loss of
consciousness. Monitoring for cold stress is described in Section 3.13.7.
3.4.2.2 Noise Exposures
Hazardous noise levels (that is, noise in excess of the ACGIH Threshold Limit Value (TLV)
and OSHA Action Level of 85 dBA) are likely to be produced by tank removal operations.
Where noise does exceed 85 dBA in an eight hour Time Weighted Average (TWA),
engineering controls and/or personal hearing protective devices will be required. Noise
monitoring will be performed by the site safety health officer. As a general rule, hearing
protective devices are required whenever a worker finds it necessary to raise his/her voice in
order to be understood at arms length. If noise levels rise to this level, the SSHO will require
workers to wear hearing protection devices. All workers will be issued earplugs during
mobilization or during the Tailgate Safety Meeting.
3.4.2.3 Slip/Pinch/Impact
The use of excavation equipment presents several possible slip, pinch, or impact hazards.
Such hazards will be minimized by the use of the personal protective equipment listed in
Section 3.7. The following additional control measures will be implemented to prevent
injuries from physical hazards:
• All personnel will use extreme caution when working in the vicinity of
equipment.
• The work area around back hoe will be treated as off-limits to all non-essential
personnel.
MZ/07-07-921EES/ENG2054r 3-4
