Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Working To Restore Nature
Subject: Newark Sierra Paperboard Corp., 800 W. Church St., Stockton, CA (Plate 1)
Dear Ms. Violett:
In accordance with our telephone conversation on May 11, 1994, this correspondence presents
a letter workplan for piping, vault and sump closure at the subject site. The locations of the
vaults and sump are presented on Plate 2. The proposed workscope and methodology for closing
the courtyard vaults is outlined below:
o The piping located in the vicinity of the vaults and sump will be abandoned by plugging
the exposed openings with concrete inserted approximately 2 feet into the pipes and
welding steel caps over the ends.
O The vaults and sump will be abandoned by backfilling with controlled density fill material
(CDF). The material will be pumped into the vaults and sump. Attachment 1 contains
the specifications of the CDF.
O The concrete rubble generated as a result of opening the vault roofs will be deposited in
the vault pit concurrent with placement of the CDF.
o Prior to filling the sump with CDF the location of the high pressure underground fire
suppression line will be well marked on the sump curbing to facilitate future
identification.
o Lengths of PVC pipe will be placed vertically into the sump and vaults prior to filling
with the CDF material. The pipes will be filled with CDF and left in place to identify
safe and unobstructed drilling locations should future drilling be necessary.
M:\7 ODIMREPORMWM594. FNL
