AIRPORT WAY STOCKTON CA
I have conferred with the previous co-chair of the Northern California Hazardous Material
Committee, Mr. Hanselka. He was there when 7902.6 of the Uniform Fire Code was written.
If the tank is properly buried, the intent of the fire code was that vertical loads shall be
transmitted to the ground and not to the tank. No loads or vibrations are to be transferred to
the tank. The idea of a Self-contained Modular Unit (Coffin Tank) was not addressed at that
time because the tank system was not on the market.
The manufactures of the tank must present the design to the Uniform Fire Code
Committees. When this is accomplished, the Fire Code Committees will address the
structure of the Self Contained Modular Unit (Coffin Tank) in the new fire code cycle.
I had not received testing on finite element analysis as requested. After consulting with
other code consultants, and based on the information we have received, we regretfully will
not allow the design of the coffin tank system as submitted to be installed in this jurisdiction.
Thank you for your cooperation.
W.
