Those methods not found in SW 846 are specifically noted below. Refer to the "SWRCB LUFT Field Manual", Appendix D (B), Table 3-5 on page A20 for minimum detection limits for motor vehicle fuel (gasoline and diesel). Refer to 1-2-3 "Regional Board Staff Recommendations for Initial Evaluation and Investigation of UST's" for the waste and motor oil minimum detection limits. Detection Limits that remain below the MCL, STLC or Allowable Limit of the contaminant in question will be accepted, however laboratory shall utilize the most conservative method. AA 7420, AA 7421 or ICP-AES 6010 MTBE Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether, GC/MS 8260 METALS ICAP or AA Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry 6010 or Atomic Absorption Spectrometry 7000. Metals: Cadmium, Chromium 10 and VI, Lead, Zinc and Nickel. PCB Polychlorinated Biphenyls, GC/MS 8270 or 8080 GC-FID Gas Chromatography, Flame Ionization Detection Method 3050 Acid digestion Method 3540 Soxhlet sample preparation Method 3550 Sonicarion sample preparation, extraction method Method 5030 Purge and trap sample preparation QA/QC Quality Assurance/Quality Control Notes: To avoid false positive detection of benzene, benzene-free solvents are to be used. Fused capillary columns are preferred to packed columns; a packed column may be used as a "first cut" with "dirty" samples or once the hydrocarbons have been characterized and proper QA/QC is followed. For drinking water sources, EPA recommends that the 500 series for volatile organic should be used in preference to the 600 series because the detection limits are lower and the QA/QC is better.
