Results of samples collected
during removal of two USTs were submitted under separate cover.
On August 27, 2001, Mr. Sean Garvey of Ground Zero, Ms. Allison Youngblood of San Joaquin County
Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD), and Mr. Dave Barboza of Tracy Fire
Department arrived on site to observe the removal of one approximately 1,000 gallon unknown fuel UST
by Tim Thorpe Oil, Inc (Thorpe). The tank was removed under permit issued by PHS/EHD and was
identified as number 39-515600. According to Thorpe, no product was present in the tank upon it iial
examination. The previous contents of the UST is unknown. The UST was rinsed and inerted with dry ice
prior to removal.
Numerous holes ranging from approximately '/4 inch to 4 inches in diameter were present along the
tank bottom. Surface rust was present on the remainder of the tank. No soil discoloration was
apparent along the sidewalls or floor of the excavation. A slight kerosene odor was noted, but it was
unclear if the odor was in the soil or from rinsing activities. PID measurements were less than 1 parts per
million. No water was present in the excavation. Soil and groundwater sample locations are shown on
the site plan (Figure 2). Field notes are summarized in Attachment A.
The samples were placed into an ice chest cooled to a temperature of approximately four degrees
centigrade and transported under chain of custody to Argon Laboratory (FLAP 2359) for analysis.
Analysis for each sample consisted of total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) and total
petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) by EPA method 8015 modified; benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA method 8020, gasoline oxygenates by EPA method 8260, and
total lead by EPA method 6010. Analytical results are summarized in Table 1. Laboratory data sheets
GADu \GROUNDZE\TNORPE\S*=\Tails pull cv,2.d.
