JUL 221994
r 1.0 INTRODUCTION ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
PERMIT/SERVICES
This report describes the removal of one (1) underground storage tank from the M &M Builders
Supply property located at 811 E. 11th Avenue in Tracy, California. The tank had a one
thousand (1000) gallon capacity and was constructed of steel. The tank previously contained
leaded gasoline and had been out of service for approximately ten (10) years.
r
2.0 UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANK REMOVAL
The tank was removed from the site on June 23, 1994 and transported for disposal to Erickson,
Inc. by Dillard Environmental Services (DES). Soil samples were collected from the excavation
following the removal of the tank. William R. Snavely of the San Joaquin Environmental Health
Division (SJEHD) was on site to observe the tank removal and soil sampling. The tank
excavation had a total depth of twelve (12) feet below ground surface. Upon removal and
inspection, the tank exterior appeared to be in good condition and no holes or leaks were noted.
r
The soil at the site is predominantly dark brown, clayey, sandy, silt. a minimal petroleum odor
and soil staining was noted during the excavation. Groundwater was encountered in the tank
excavation at approximately ten (10) feet from ground surface. The excavated soil ( approx. 40
cubic yards), was placed on visqueen sheeting and covered for temporary storage pending
r
laboratory results. The excavation was left open and surrounded with barricades.
2.1 Soil Samples
Two (2) soil samples were collected beneath the former tank location in the sidewalls of the
excavation at a depth of approximately 10 feet. The samples were collected by driving a clean
brass sleeve into freshly exposed soil brought to the surface in a backhoe bucket. One (1) water
sample was collected from the water which filled the excavation following the removal. Two
(2) additional samples were collected from the stockpiled soil. The stockpile samples were
r collected from four random locations within the stockpile at depths of approximately 12 to 18
inches. The four samples points were composite into two samples for analysis.
r Each soil sample was sealed with aluminum foil, capped, wrapped with duct tape, labeled, and
placed in a cooler with ice for storage. The water sample was collected in an amber liter bottle
and place in the cooler for storage. The samples were hand delivered, the same day, under chain-
of-custody procedures to Argon Mobile Labs, in Ceres, California.
2.2 Laboratory Analyses
r
The soil and water samples were analyzed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylene
(BTEX) by method 8020, for total petroleum hydrocarbons, quantified as gasoline (TPH-G) by
method 5030/LUFT, and for total lead by method 6010.
