HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SOIL
VOLUME/MASS -ASSUMPTIONS AND CALCULATIONS
Volume of impacted soil removed from the vicinity of the former USTs and dispenser islands during
the excavation procedures:
Based on the average hydrocarbon concentration ofTPH-g in excavated stockpile soil samples, UST
removal soil samples and overexcavation soil samples, the following calculation for the removed
petroleum as gasoline has been made.
The impacted soil from the UST removal and overexcavation soil samples had the following
concentrations:
• UST-1 <1.0 mg/kg,UST-2 <1.0 mg/kg,UST-3 <1.0 mg/kg, UST- 4 39 mg/kg;
• EXC -1<1.0 mg/kg, EXC -2 <1.0 mg/kg, EXC -3 <1.0 mg/kg, EXC -4 <1.0 mg/kg;
• EXC -5<1.0 mg/kg,MW 3 - 10 7.0 mg/kg,MW 3 - 15 8.6 mg/kg, MW 4 - 15 <1.0 mg/kg;
• MW 2 - 10 4.8 mg/kg, MW2 - 15 2,300 mg/kg, 133 -10 340 mg/kg,B3 -15 110 mg/kg; and
• B4 -15 180 mg/kg, WW(exc 2000) <1.0 mg/kg,NW(exc 2000) 730mg/kg
A total of 1,130.93 tons of impacted soil was disposed with an average concentration of
195.7 milligrams per kilogram of gasoline. The mass of excavated soil was determined from the
weight of the soil disposed at Forward Landfill Solid Waste Facility.
Calculations
weight:
1,130.93 tons removed•2,000 pounds/ton= 2,261,860 pounds soil
2,261,860 pounds soil • 0.454 kilograms/lbs= 1,026,884.44 kilograms soil
1,026,884.44 kilograms soil • 195.7 mg/kg of gasoline=200,961,284.9 milligrams of gasoline
(200.96 kilograms)
200,961,284.9 milligrams of gasoline- 1,000 milligram/grams=200,961.28 grams of gasoline
- volume:
200,961.28 grams of gasoline-0.75 grams/cm3 =267,948.38 cm' of gasoline
(267,948.38 cm' of gasoline-3,785 CM3/gallon)= 70.79 gallons of gasoline removed
r.
