1. H. KLEINFELDER & ASSOCIATES
File: 24-2038-1/28:725
December 10, 1986
Page 2
■
The scope of work included:
• Drilling two soil borings and collecting soil samples.
• Installing two—inch ground water monitoring wells in each soil
.. boring.
• Chemically analyzing selected soil samples for volatile
aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylene) by EPA Method 8020, total
petroleum hydrocarbons by GC—FID, ethylene dibromide, and total
lead.
• Developing the two monitoring wells and collecting water samples
from each well.
r • Chemically analyzing the water samples for volatile aromatics
(benzene, toluene, xylene) by EPA Method 602 and total
hydrocarbons by GC—FID.
• Summarizing and presenting all field and analytical results in a
final report.
5.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES
5.1 Drilling of Soil Borings
Two soil borings were drilled on October 28 and 29, 1986, using a
truck mounted Acker AD—II drill rig equipped with eight—inch hollow stem
augers. Soil boring MW-1 was drilled on the west side of the underground
tank, and soil boring MW-2 was drilled on the south side of the tank. Ms.
Laurie Cotulla, of the San Joaquin Local Health District, assisted in the
selection of the boring locations. The locations of the two soil borings
and the underground storage tank are shown on Plate No. 2. Both borings
were drilled to a depth of 59 feet below the ground surface. Ground water
was encountered at a depth of 39 feet below the ground surface in the two
borings.
During the drilling, a JHK&A geologist classified the subsurface
soils, collected soil samples, and logged the boreholes. Descriptions of
the soils encountered are presented on Plate Nos. 4 and 5 with a copy of
the Unified Soils Classification System (used to identify the soil)
included as Plate No. 3. Plate Nos. 3 through 5 are included in Appendix
A of this report. The soils encountered during drilling consisted of
clayey silt, silt, silty sand, and sand.
To minimize cross—contamination, all augers and associated equipment
were steam cleaned prior to the drilling of each borehole. The sampling
