Benzene comprises approximately 0.002 to 0.011% of the total fuel mixture. Exposure to diesel fuel can cause no more than minor eye irritation. Prolonged breathing of vapors can impact on the central nervous system. Diesel fuel is not generally expected to have acute systemic toxicity by ingestion. Ingestion of diesel fuel and/or subsequent vomiting can result in aspiration of light hydrocarbon liquid which can cause pneumonics. There is no Federal or State OSHA PEL or ACGIH TLV standard established for diesel fuel. The PEL/TLV (permissible exposure limit, threshold limit value), STEL (short term exposure limit) and IDLH (immediately dangerous to life and health) values are listed below: PEL/TLV STEL IDHIL Lead 0.1 mg/m3 Tetraethyllead 0.075 mg/m3 0.3 mg/m3 40 mg/m3 Tetramethyllead 0.07 mg/m3 0.5 mg/m3 40 mg/m3 Benzene 10 ppm 25 ppm 2,000 ppm Toluene 100 ppm 150 ppm 2,000 ppm Ethylbenzene 100 ppm 125 ppm 2,000 ppm Xylene 100 ppm 150 ppm 10,000 ppm There are no PEL, TLV STEL or IDLH values established for diesel. General Background of fuel oil Constituents of fuel oil can include but are not limited to benzene, toluene and xylene. Exposure to these compounds can cause nausea, dizziness, visual disturbances, narcosis and collapse. Chronic effects include central nervous system disorders, respiratory tract irritation, tearing, lassitude and immunological disorders. The PEL for benzene and xylene is 100ppm. The time weighted average/eight hours (TWA) for toluene is 100 ppm.
