SACRAMENTO
2 . 0 ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING
2. 1 Site Location and Description
The Pacific Bell facility is located at 7644 Ashley Road,
' Stockton, California, (Pacific Bell facility number UE-132) . The
facility has been in operation as a switching station since 1964.
The facility is located in a rural area of San Joaquin County,
' approximately two miles east of Highway 99 and just north of the
Calaveras River.
1 The site is flat lying with a very slight slope to the
northeast and an average elevation of approximately 48 feet above
' mean sea level. The site consists of a single-story building and
a fenced, asphalted yard on the northeast side of the building.
' The facility was manned until an automated switching system was
installed during the first part of 1991 ; the facility is
currently unmanned. The southwest portion of the site was
landscaped at one time, however, the UST removal and subsequent
irrigation system failure have returned this area to its natural
state of bare earth with minor patches of bermuda grass.
2 .2 Regional and Site Geology
' The Pacific Bell facility is located in the Great Valley
physiographic province. The Great Valley is a massive geologic
' sequence, consisting primarily of alluvial , flood, and delta
plains formed by the valleys two major rivers (the Sacramento
IRiver and the San Joaquin River) and their tributaries, one of
which is the Calaveras River. The resulting topography of the
area is broad and flat with an average elevation at the facility
of 48 feet above mean sea level . The area is underlain by sands,
silts, clays, and gravels of nonmarine origin, which are of
Quaternary age (Norris and Webb, 1991) . These sediments are
generally loosely consolidated. Runoff of surface water is slow
and erosion is a slight hazard.
I 4
