Our services were performed in
response to gasoline odor detected during the subject gasoline tank removal.
Representatives of our firm drilled one test boring on September 17, 1985,
adjacent to the open pit where tanks had recently been removed. The test boring
extended to maximum depth of 15 feet below existing ground surface. Soil and
water samples were obtained in order to observe and test for gasoline content.
Samples were obtained by driving a 2-inch inside diameter sampler into the soil
using a 140-pound hammer falling approximately 30 inches. Soil samples were
capped with aluminum foil and plastic caps and water samples were placed in
sanitary containers. They were kept cool until delivery to the laboratory for
gasoline content testing.
In general, the soil conditions encountered consisted of a sandy gravel fill
material from the surface to approximately 8 feet. A dense silty sand extended
from 8 feet to the maximum depth drilled of 15 feet. No gas odors were detected
in the surface 8 feet of sampling. Gas odor was detected in the samples
obtained below
Groundwater was encountered at 13 feet below the surface in the test boring.
More detailed descriptions of the soil conditions encountered in the test
boring are presented on Plate III. All soils have been classified according to
the Unified Soil Classification System presented on Plate II.
Gasoline Content Tests were performed by Canonie Engineers of Stockton on a
water sample obtained from approximately 13 feet in the boring adjacent to the
pit. A copy of their results is presented at the end of this report.
