Those methods not found
in SW 846, are specifically noted below. Refer to the 'SWRCB LUFT Field Manual", Appendix A-20, Table 3-5 for
detection limits of motor vehicle fuels (gasoline and diesel). Refer to 1-2-3 "Regional Board Staff Recommendations for
Initial Evaluation and Investigation of USTs" for the waste and motor oil detection limits.
Detection Limits that remain below the MCL, sTLC or Allowable I1m(t of the contaminant In question will be accepted,
however laboratory shall utilize the most conservative method.
LABORATORY ANALYSES TERMINOLOGY
TPH-G
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon, Gasoline, jC/FID (5030) 8015 mod or GC/MS 8260
TPH-D
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon, Diesel, GC/FID (3550), 8015 mod or GC/MS 8260
BTX & E
Benzene, Toluene, Xylene & Ethyl Benzene, GC/PID 8020 or GC/MS 8260
CL HC
Chlorinated Hydrocarbon, GC/HSD 8010, GC/MS 8240
TOTAL LEAD
Total lead, AA 7420, AA 7421 or ICP -AES 6010
EDB
Ethylene dibromide (DHS -AB 1803), CC/`MS 8240 (DHS-LUFT)
GC -FID
Gas Chromatography, Flame Ionization Detection
ICAP or AA
Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry 6010 or Atomic Absorption
Spectrometry 7000. Fused capillary columns are
preferred to packed columns; a packed column may be used as a 'first cut" with 'dirty" samples or once the hydrocarbons
have been characterized and proper QA/AC is followed.
For Drinking water sources, EPA recommends that the 500 series for volatile organics be used in preference to the 600
series because the detection limits are lower and the QA/QC is better. Samples exhibiting any level of heavy metal
contamination may require further analysis. PHS-EHD recommends holding these samples until disposal is indicated.
EH 23 048 (Revisal 7/10/92) Page 8
