09/11.01 TGE 09:27 F.42
KLEINFELDER
nn.-m.+u.+avrn+ amu.0 •
File No. 20-3908-01
September 6, 2001
Mr. Martin Thorpe
Jim Thorpe Oil Company
351 Beckman Road
Lodi, CA 95240
Subject: FIELD DENSITY TESTS
CANCUN RESTAURANT
STOCK'TON, CALIFORNIA
Dear Mr. Thorpe:
This report presents the results of compaction tests taken at the subject project. As requested, a
representative of our firm performed tests at the site on July 31 and August 2, 2001. Seven tests
were taken by the nuclear probe test method at random locations on parking area subgtade. The
depth of backfill was approximately 5.0 feet. A sample of the material tested was brcught to our
laboratory for determination of the maximum density -optimum moisture content. The test
results, summarized on the attached table, conform to the compaction requirements of the project
specifications.
RECOP&MENDATIONS
Moisture Conditioning
The silty clay subgrade material at the site is expansive. In order to reduce the risk of heaving,
the clayey soils beneath concrete slabs should be wetted or pre-soaked to uniformly raise the
moisture content of the soil to at least 3 percentage poirrts above the optimum moisture content
or above the liquid limit of the soil, whichever is less. The depth of pre-soaking should extend to
a depth of at least 18 incbes below floor slabs.
;Moisture Testing
Moisture tests should be taken prior to placement of the moisture vapor barrier and/or reinforcing
steel to confirm that the elevated moisture content has been achieved. We stress that weather
conditions, e.g., temperature, wind, and humidity, at the time of moisture conditioning will
determine the amount of time allowed between moisture ccaditioning and slab placement.
Generally, moisture tests should be taken no more than three days prior to slab placement.
However, in hot and/or windy weather, moisture tests should be taken no more tlxn
approximately 24 hours prior to slab placement.
20-3908-D 1; 20 '' P 1066 Page, of t
ILEI N5EIt.
11N{`'-'.
