Carpenter
Co. , Lathrop, CA
01/07/2004 02:27
PM
Dear Mr. de Biasi,
Per your request, I am writing this email concerning the spill of
Prepolymer 22 at Carpenter Co. , 17100 S. Harlan Road, Lathrop, CA
95330.
On January 5th, we experienced a spill of Prepolymer 22 from a process
tank within the confinesof our facility. The material amount of the
spill was approximately 500 gallons. The entire contents of the spill
were within the containment pit in which this tank is situated. The
spill was a result of an uncontrolled chemical reaction. Typically, the
chemicals that are mixed together to manufacture Prepolymer 22 are the
only components of the mixture. In this instance, water was introduced
to the mixture via a process air flush. Water acts as a catalyst for
this mixture and began a reaction which caused a sudden volume increase
of material within the tank. The tank was unable to contain this sudden
volume increase, resulting in the previously described spill.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Denny Bryant
Division Manager
Carpenter Co.
Lathrop, CA 95330
1
