SAMPLE PROTOCOL STOCKTON FACILITY
There is an area approximately thirty foot by thirty foot in the rear yard that is not
covered with vegetation. It is the low area of the yard and during the wet season is
covered with water. On July 28, 2005 a soil sample was collected by Kasey Foley with
the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department. The sample was submitted
to GeoAnalytical Laboratories who conducted a CAM 17 TTLC analysis. The analysis
indicated it was high for chromium. A STLC analysis was conducted confirming the
chromium to be above California limits. A Title 22 "Hazardous Waste" Toxicity
Evaluation was also conducted on the sample. The conclusions indicated the sample was
not acutely toxic to flathead minnows and should not be considered a hazardous waste
with respect to fish toxicity. San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
indicated this evaluation would not need to be repeated.
Sierra Chemical Co. was directed to establish a sampling plan to determine if the area is
indeed high in chromium or if the grab sample was an anomaly. The following protocol
is that plan.
The area will be marked into numbered 10 foot square grids separated into quarters. The
quarters will be labeled a, b, c, &d starting in the upper right hand corner and going
clockwise. A letter will be drawn to randomly select in which quarter of each grid the
sample will be collected. A distinct sample will be collected from the top 4 inches
blended, split and labeled. One split will be provided to the San Joaquin County Health
Department. The other will be delivered by Sierra Chemical under chain of custody to a
California Certified Lab. The lab will conduct a CAM 17 TTLC analysis. If chromium
exceeds California limits a STLC analysis will be performed.
Between each sample the tool used for collection will be washed with a phosphate free
detergent(Liqui-Nox), rinsed with distilled water and dried. Caution will be taken not to
track any potential contamination to the sample locations. Sample collection will be from
the edge of the area working to the center.
