RESOURCE CONSERVATION & RECOVERY ACT <br /> Federal legislation that required USEPA to develop regulations to properly manage hazardous waste. <br /> USEPA wrote hazardous waste management regulations published at 40 CFR Parts 260-265. <br /> PART 260- HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT - GENERAL <br /> SUBPART B - Definitions (260.10) <br /> "CONTAINER"- Means any portable device in which a material is stored, transported, <br /> treated, disposed of, or otherwise handled. <br /> "CONTINGENCY" PLAN - Means a document setting out an organized, planned, and <br /> coordinated course of action to be followed in case of a fire, <br /> explosion, or release of hazardous waste or hazardous waste <br /> constituents which could threaten human health or the <br /> environment. <br /> "DIKE"- Means an embankment or ridge of either natural or manmade <br /> materials used to prevent the movement of liquids, sludges, <br /> solids, or other materials. <br /> "DISCHARGE"or <br /> "HAZARDOUS WASTE <br /> DISCHARGE"- Means the accidental or intentional spilling, leaking, <br /> pumping, pouring, emitting, emptying, or dumping of hazardous <br /> waste into or on any land or water. <br /> "ELEMENTARY <br /> NEUTRALIZATION <br /> UNIT"- Means a device which: <br /> (1) is used for neutralizing wastes that are <br /> hazardous only because they exhibit the corrosivity characteristic <br /> defined in 261.22 of this chapter, or they are listed in Subpart D of <br /> Part 261 of the chapter only for this reason; and <br /> (2) meets the definition of a tank, tank system, <br /> container, transport vehicle, or vessel in 260.10 of this chapter. <br /> "EPA HAZARDOUS <br /> WASTE <br /> NUMBER" - Means the number assigned by EPA to each hazardous waste <br /> listed in Part 261, Subpart D, of this chapter and to each characteristic <br /> identified in Part 261, Subpart C, of this chapter. <br /> "EPA IDENTIFICATION <br /> NUMBER"- Means the number assigned by EPA to each generator, transporter, and <br /> storage, treatment, or disposal facility. <br />
