James Podesta 2 November 9, 1990
temperature of 150 F. Up to this time these limits have adequately protected the sewer system
from corrosion and odor release.
Indy has stated by phone (conversation with Mr. Mike Davis, November 9, 1990) and in their
permit application that the addition of anodizing chemicals will not affect the pH, temperature, or
flow rate of their wastewater discharge. Therefore, the additional discharges of sulfuric acid,
sulfates, and sulfides from the anodizadon line are not expected to cause additional negative
impacts to the sewer system.
Ferric sulfate (Fe2(SO4)3) will also be discharged by Indy. Ferric sulfate is typically added to
sewage to induce coagulation and to control sulfide odors (whereby sulfides are precipitated out as
iron sulfides). This compound is not expected to have any negative impacts on the sewer system.
Acids and Other Compounds. Indy's discharge of additional acids (sulfosalicylic acid
(C7146O6S) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4)) will be controlled by the pH limit in their permit. These
acid discharges are not expected to cause additional negative impacts to the sewer system.
Aqueous sodium nitrite (NaNO2) is alkaline and can be oxidized to sodium nitrate (NaNO3), which
is used in sewage treatment for odor control. Sodium nitrite is not expected to cause additional
negative impacts to the sewer system, and will be adequately controlled by the pH limitation in
Indy's permit. Sodium bifluoride (NaFHF) is used in laundering and is not expected to cause any
negative impacts to the sewer system in the quantities and concentrations being discharged by
Indy.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on our review of the quantities and concentrations of the proposed anodizing chemicals,
JMM recommends approval of an amended permit for Indy Electronics' anodization line. Indy's
discharge is not prohibited by City ordinances, and is not expected to cause any negative impacts
on the sewer system or treatment plant. All future discharges by Indy shall follow the guidelines
of the existing permit.
PERMIT REVIEW CHARGES
JMM's cost for this review is as follows.
• 2 hours, Supervising Engineer @ $89/hour = $ 178
1 hour, Senior Engineer @ $76/hour = $ 76
• 10 hours, Engineer @ $62/hour = $ 620
• Other direct costs = $ 100
Therefore, the total cost for this review is $974. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any
questions.
Very truly yours,,
(04 A 6AO—
Anaya Nance
Engineer
cc: Keith Conarroe, JMM
Accounting Dept.,JMM
