Sample 2 was hazardous for copper on the basis of <br /> ` the STLC result only. Reports from the respective analytical laboratories are included <br /> Appendix 2. <br /> �- The STLC-DI result shown for sample 2 used DI water extract instead of the 0.20 M <br /> Citrate Buffer solution. This was done to provide guidance as to whether to expect that <br /> rain water would extract copper from the used sand and carry it to the soil and ultimately <br /> to groundwater. The result would suggest that little or no leaching will occur from rain <br /> water falling on the used sand. This is to be expected, since all of the coatings used on <br /> boat bottoms, which form the source of the copper contamination, have been formulated <br /> ` for durability while immersed in water. The removal by sandblasting is through ablation, <br /> not dissolution. Thus the copper contaminants will be coating particulates, which should <br /> ` exhibit similar properties with respect to solubility as the original coatings. <br /> 5.0 Cleanup Procedure <br /> Used sand has been spread on the ground north of the office building in several small, <br /> low piles, generally as shown in Figure 2. This used sand will be picked up and placed on <br /> a plastic sheet remote from the area of possible contamination. The center of each area <br /> where used sand was deposited on the ground will be marked by a wooden stake driven <br /> into the ground. <br /> r <br /> When all of the used sand has been picked up and placed on the plastic sheet, a number <br /> of samples will be taken as follows: <br /> The pile will be divided into quarters. Two samples will be taken from each quarter, one <br /> from the top 2 inches, and 1 from the the bottom 4 inches, making a total of eight <br /> separate samples. These will be sent to a State of California approved laboratory under <br /> chain of custody. The laboratory will be asked to composite the eight individual samples <br /> into a single sample for analysis for copper on a total basis (TTLC analysis using EPA <br /> methods 3050B and 6010B to extract and analyze the sample respectively). The <br /> laboratory will be requested to save the sample in case additional analyses are required. <br /> - 3 - <br />
