• 0
surface, respectively. The location of each sample is shown in Figure 2.
• Each soil sample was collected using the backhoe bucket. Each soil sample was collected near the teeth of
the backhoe bucket by driving a six-inch brass sample ring into native soil within the bucket. Each soil
sample was properly sealed, labeled, and immediately placed in an ice-chest containing ice for transport.
The soil samples were delivered under proper chain-of-custody to a certified independent analytical
laboratory.
3.3.3 Soil Stockpiles
Six soil samples (composited into three samples at the analytical laboratory) were collected from the
excavated soil stockpile at the site. Each soil sample was collected from a representative area of the
stockpile by digging into the stockpile using a shovel and pushing a six-inch brass sample ring into the soil
within the stockpile. The soil samples were properly sealed, labeled, and immediately placed in an ice-chest
containing ice for transport. The soil samples were delivered under chain-of-custody to a certified
independent analytical laboratory.
3.4 LABORATORY ANALYSIS
. The soil samples collected from the site were transported the day of collection to Columbia Analytical
Services Inc. in San Jose, California. The six soil samples collected from below the former tanks and
below the dispenser islands at the site were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline
(TPH-G), and Diesel (TPH-D)according to Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)Method 8015
Modified, for Benzene,Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Total Xylenes (BTEX)using EPA Method 8020, for
Oxygenate Compounds using EPA Method 8260, and for total lead. The three composite soil samples
collected from the soil stockpiles were analyzed for TPH-G, and TPH-D according to EPA Method 8015
Modified, for BTEX using EPA Method 8020, and for Oxygenate Compounds using EPA Method 8260.
3.5 BACKFILLING AND RESURFACING THE EXCAVATION
On December 19, 1997,H.B. Covey backfilled the tank excavation with soil previously excavated from the
tank basin and imported fill material. The backfill material was used to bring the excavation up to within
four inches of the site grade. On December 22, 1997,H.B. covey resurfaced the excavation with concrete
to match the surrounding grade.
6
