5.0 SUMMARY
In December 1997, a tank removal team conducted a tank removal and closure program at U-Haul facility
#709-23 located at 7701 Tam O'Shanter in Stockton,California. The objectives of the tank closure program
were to remove one 6,000-gallon gasoline and one 6,000-gallon diesel fuel underground fuel tanks,
associated piping and dispenser island; to evaluate the presence or absence of petroleum hydrocarbons in
the soil below the underground tank system; and to close the underground storage tank system in accordance
with the requirements of the San Joaquin County Public Health Services-Environmental Health Division.
The underground storage tank closure program involved obtaining tank closure permits from the City of
Stockton Fire Department-Fire Prevention Division, and rinsing, purging, excavating and removing the
underground storage tank system. Soil samples were collected below the underground storage tanks, below
the dispenser island, and from the soil stockpile at the site in accordance with San Joaquin County Public
Health Services-Environmental Health Division.requirements. Soil samples were transported to Columbia
Analytical Services,Inc. in San Jose, California(a certified independent analytical laboratory) and analyzed
for the constituents stored in the former tanks.
The laboratory analysis indicated that the soil samples collected below the former underground gasoline and
diesel fuel storage tanks and dispensers did not contain detectable petroleum hydrocarbon concentrations
above laboratory reporting limits. Laboratory analysis indicated that the soil samples collected as
composites from the stockpiled soil at the site contained concentrations of diesel fuel ranging from 5.8 to
250 parts per million. Further, one of the three composite soil samples contained a TPH-G concentration
of 15 parts per million and a total xylenes concentration of 0.32 parts per million. The stockpiled soil was
placed back into excavation along with imported fill material and the excavation was resurfaced with
concrete.
Based on the field observations and laboratory analysis,Amerco Real Estate Company/U-Haul International
is requesting site closure.
8
